How do I document a job in case I am not paid?

I want to protect myself when a company is slow to pay. What records help?

Keep records from day one, in one folder (cloud and phone): - The offer in writing: pay rate, per diem, dates, who the company is and who you report to. - Daily time: dates, sites, hours, the crew, the foreman’s name. Photos of the sign-in sheet and the job hazard briefing help. - Texts and emails about pay, schedule changes and approvals; do not delete them. - Pay stubs, bank deposits and any invoices you sent. - Photos of the finished work and closeout documents. If pay is late, ask in writing for a date. Wage claims for employees usually go through your state labor department. For contractors and companies below you in the chain, payment and lien rules differ by state and often have short deadlines, so talk to a lawyer early.
